Paint sidewalks for bicycle lanes

Re: Guelph’s new cycling master plan (Tribune, Feb. 21)
Is this the reasoning behind the push for more bike lanes in Guelph? Aside from Gordon Street between Stone and College and the downtown area, you seldom see these lanes being used.
Would not a simple solution be to use our empty sidewalks? Paint a line down the middle of the sidewalk, and one side would be for the few people who use them and the other half would be for bicyclists.
Safer for the harebrained cyclist who was driving down Woodlawn at 6:30 a.m. last week – a road with no bike lanes –  and a cheaper road for the taxpayers who rarely use the lanes we already have!!!
