Pity the poor crossing guards

I am a retired school teacher who has recently moved from Sarnia to Guelph to live with a friend in the Summerfield/Colonial area.
As much as I love the area, I have concerns about the snow removal service. I am an avid walker and the sidewalks and streets are extremely treacherous. Public works certainly seems to take their sweet time on the streets, sidewalks and crosswalks.
I may be one of the few people who feels for the crossing guards, as they are always sanding their traffic circle, digging out a path with their scoops or traffic paddle after a snowfall.
I often walk on the road, as the sidewalks are like a sheet of ice. Today I saw the sidewalk plow three times driving down the road. I walked in the afternoon and he never went down the sidewalks at all.
I also don’t understand why the snowplows can’t lift the front of their plows so as not to snow in the crosswalks where the guards work and pupils cross.
I looked up what the guards get paid, and it’s not worth waking up early to fight weather conditions as well as the lousy conditions of the streets, sidewalks and crosswalks.
I would just like to see public works do their job quickly and effectively, so other city workers can do theirs.
