Taking a run at tch sector

With the world becoming more and more technology oriented, it’s natural that Guelph would want to foster this job sector. It’s obviously a big part of the economic wave of the future, and it’s a relatively non-polluting sort of enterprise. But fostering it is easier said than done in a city that’s just a short drive away from Kitchener-Waterloo, which has been described as Canada’s version of California’s Silicon Valley.
So it’s refreshing to see that about 30 local tech firms have come together to form the Guelph Technology and Design Cluster Cooperative, rather than continuing to toil in isolation. And it’s impressive to see the excitement in the U of G’s Science Complex Atrium that was generated Tuesday by the second annual Guelph Technology Showcase, put on by this cooperative and the U of G’s School of Computer Science.
It’s hard to compete with the spinoff companies from the University of Waterloo, an internationally recognized  hotbed of computer science expertise. It’s a force of gravity luring tech talent, as well as exporting it. Even Google wanted to be there, inside a tech hub in downtown Kitchener. But Guelph’s tech scene possesses the strength that comes from having software and web-based companies that have been doing well for many years. And the Guelph Technology and Design Cluster Cooperative is working hard to make the city a more attractive place for tech jobs.
Go, Guelph, go!
