There are two PRESTO machines outside the station building at Guelph Central which look exactly the same, both green – and both bleep when you tap on them.
Except that one is only for checking balances and won’t deduct your fare.
I’ve observed and advised many fellow commuters who didn’t realize they would have been travelling without paying. Balance checking machines at Toronto union station are yellow, so you can tell them apart.
I mentioned this to a ticket inspector on the GO train, who said she’d pass it on, but I wanted to advise people to be careful until it (hopefully) changes colour!
