Guelph’s Bill Sweeney is getting inducted into the American Hockey League Hall of Fame.

Sweeney played 12 seasons in the league, from 1957 to 1969. In 695 regular season games, he scored 294 goals and recorded 510 assists, for 804 points. In 51 playoff games, he had 23 goals and 26 assists.

He started his AHL career with the Providance Reds before playing the next season with the Buffalo Bisons and the next nine with the Springfield Indians. He finished his AHL career with the Rochester Americans. His 31 goals and 46 assists in 70 games as a rookie earned him the Dudley “Red” Garrett Award as the AHL’s outstanding rookie.

Sweeney, who passed away in 1991 at the age of 54, remains one of only 10 players in league history with at least 800 points.

In the NHL, Sweeney recorded a goal in four games with the New York Rangers.

Sweeney was posthumously inducted into the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

The 2010 AHL induction ceremony is scheduled for January 19 in Portland, Maine.
