Gryphons oh so close

The upstart Guelph Gryphons men’s volleyball team made it all the way to the OUA finals before falling 15-13 in the fifth and deciding set against Queen’s on Saturday at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Gryphon Winston Rosser was the leading hitter for Guelph with 14 kills. Jonathan Whitton had 11 and Kevin Stewart had 10.

Guelph lost the first two sets 25-22 and 25-17 before winning the next two 25-17 and 25-22.

The night before, Guelph topped top-seeded McMaster 3-2 in the semifinals. The Gryphs finished the regular season in fifth in the 11-team OUA with an 11-9 record before making it all the way to the final.

PUCK GRYPHS FALL IN FINAL

The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks won their seventh straight OUA women’s hockey title by beating Guelph 2-1 on Saturday in the second game of the best-of-three championship. Laurier, undefeated on the season and ranked No. 2 in the nation, won the first game 2-0.

Erin Small had the lone goal for Guelph in the series. The Gryphons finished the regular season with a 14-10-0 record.

Among members of the golden Golden Hawks is Guelph native Kristen Kilgallen, a John F. Ross CVI graduate who is a goaltender in her rookie season with the team.

WRESTLER ROOKIE OF YEAR

Guelph Gryphon wrestler Jacob Jagas won a CIS gold medal and has been named CIS Rookie of the Year. Jagas, of Kitchener, earned gold at the 72kg event at nationals hosted by the Calgary Dinos. Gryphon Kyle Grant of Whitby won the R. W. Pugh Fair Play Award. He was second in the 130kg category.

Guelph was sixth overall in the men’s standings and the women were 10th. Simon Fraser finished atop both men’s and women’s standings.

Other Gryphons with top-eight finishes: Scott Wolowich, seventh; Kevin Iwasa- Madge, third; Mike Katsilas, seventh; Mathieu Deschateletes, fifth; Laura Christensen, fifth; Allison Leslie, fifth; Hilary Rafla, sixth.
