Canes edged on the road in opener

The Waterloo Siskins snuck past the Guelph Hurricanes 2-1 on Tuesday night in Game 1 of their Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League opening round playoff series.

Both of Waterloo’s goals came on the power play as they were 2-for-3 with the man advantage. Guelph was 0-for-3.

The visiting Hurricanes got a game tying goal from Michael Courvoisier at the 6:22 mark of the third period, but less than two minutes later, Waterloo’s Nick Hirst scored what went on to be the game-winning goal.

The Hurricanes outshout their opponents 36-27 in the game.

In the regular season, Guelph was in sixth in the nine-team Midwestern Conference with a 20-24-5 record. Waterloo was third with a 34-12-3 mark.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series takes place on Friday night at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Game 3 is Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Waterloo while game 4 is Tuesday night March 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
