Guelph CVI Green Gael runner Michael Coccia scored gold at the CWOSSA cross-country championships Thursday at the University of Guelph Arboretum.
He was one of four runners from Guelph high schools to achieve a top-25 finish in the midget boys race.
Evan Clark of Our Lady of Lourdes was third while Guelph CVI’s Nathaniel Kohlmeier was sixth and John F. Ross’s Ben Vanderstam was 20th.
Centennial Spartans runner Sarah Wismer earned a second place finish in the senior girls race. First place went to Jaimie Phelan of Kitchener’s St. Mary’s high school. Other locals in the top 25 were Alyssa Bolliger, Our Lady of Lourdes, fifth; Jackie Bauman, Centennial, sixth; Olivia Mater, Guelph CVI, 11th; Kerrie Sullivan, Bishop Macdonell, 12th; Grace Nicols, Our Lady of Lourdes, 14th; Monica Sanago, Centennial, 18th; Charlotte Case, Our Lady of Lourdes, 20th; Coleen Scott, Our Lady of Lourdes, 25th.
The senior boys race was won by Ben Flanagan of St. Mary’s Kitchener. Liam Stiles of John F. Ross was the top runner from a Guelph school. He finished in seventh. Peter Quosai of Centennial was 13th and Rawle Groothuizen of Our Lady of Lourdes earned 17th.
Jared Ruest of Georgian Bay school won the junior boys race. Top 25 finishers from Guelph schools were: Willem Quosai, Centennial, third; Simon Wells, Centennial, fifth; Jack Tersigni, St. James, seventh; Drew Neil, Centennial, 11th; Isaac Wismer, Centennial, 16th; Matthew Drover, Centennial, 22nd.
Winning the junior girls race was Norwell’s Nicole Hessels. Leah Brodovsky of Guelph CVI was fourth, Sarah Welch of John F. Ross was 11th and Paige Parker of John F. Ross was 13th.
Finishing in first in the midget girls race was Alex Devries of Brantford’s North Park CVI. Carissa Gobbi of Our Lady of Lourdes earned ninth, Meaghan Smith of Lourdes was 11th, Rachelle Clayton of Guelph CVI was 14th and Alison Donovan of Lourdes earned 18th.
