Guelph event seeks fastest boy and fastest girl in Ontario

Guelph kids have a chance at being named Ontario’s Fastest Boy and Ontario’s Fastest Girl in an upcoming competition at the Toronto International Track & Field Games.
Athletics Ontario is holding 100-metre qualifying races to find the fastest boy and fastest girl in Guelph on Wednesday June 27 at 6 p.m. at the St. James high school track. Similar races are being held in communities across the province, and qualifiers will get spots in the final races taking place during the games at the University of Toronto on July 11.
The qualifying race will be part of the Guelph Youth all-comers series, hosted by the Guelph Track and Field Club. Registration begins at 4 p.m.
Top male and female in the local races will also get Timex watches, tickets for immediate family to attend the Toronto meet, and a two-week training membership with the Guelph track club prior to the meet, a news release said.
The race is open to Ontario residents born in 2001 or later. The fastest boy and girl from each qualifier will get a spot in the finale, which will be run in front of more than 4,000 people, including members of the London 2012 Olympic team, a news release said. “I’m proud to help launch the search for Ontario’s Fastest Boy and Girl,” said 2008 Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Priscilla Lopes-Schliep in the release. “This program will engage young people from across Ontario in the most inclusive and accessible of all sports, while also providing an opportunity to meet members of the London 2012 Olympic Team.”
