The University of Guelph Gryphons women’s rugby team came back to top Western 24-14 in their home opener on Saturday.
After being down 14-7 in the first half, the Gryphons opened the second half with two quick scores and outscored the Mustangs 17-0 overall in the second half.
Devon Keys led the team in scoring with 10 points on two trys. Daria Keane scored the other while Stephanie Tibelius tallied two converts and one penalty kick, for seven points.
The Gryphons (2-0) visit Wilfrid Laurier Saturday at 7 p.m.

Men’s rugby: The Gryphons lost 34-8 at Western on the weekend. Graeme Mahar had five points for Guelph and James McLeod scored three.
The Gryphons (1-1) visit Brock (1-1) Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.

Field hockey: The Gryphons are off to a 2-0 start after a pair of wins in Waterloo. They beat York 5-0 and Waterloo 3-1.
Amy Wise had three goals in the wins while singles came from Guelph native Alexis Wagner, Ciara Condon, Erin Houle, Jessica Donaldson and Nicole Paola. Kaye McLagen earned the shutout.
Guelph’s next game is against Queen’s Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Toronto.

Baseball: The Gryphons scheduled game at Brock Wednesday night was postponed after the team’s bus was involved in an accident.
Players and coaches suffered no serous injuries but six Gryphons were sent to Joseph Brant hospital in Burlington for pre-cautionary measures. All six are O.K. and have been released, said a Gryphons press release.
The team’s bus was rear-ended on the QEW, the release said.
On Sunday, Guelph was edged 4-3 and 13-12 on by Toronto.
In the 13-12 defeat, Guelph native Justin Interisano had three hits and three RBIs while Kyle Westwater had three hits and two RBIs.
The team was coming off a split of a double header against Brock Saturday. Guelph won the first game 4-3 and dropped the second contest 6-0. Guelph was to host Toronto Tuesday night. Details of the game were not available.
The Gryphons host Waterloo Saturday in a double header at Hastings Stadium. The first game is at 1 p.m. and the second at 4 p.m.

Men’s lacrosse: Guelph fell to 3-1 on the season with a 14-6 loss to Brock on the weekend. Scoring were Curtis Knight, 2, Seamus Shanahan, 2, Ryan Serville and Michael Cavanagh. Jordan Critch recorded three assists.
Guelph hosts McMaster Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.

Women’s lacrosse: The Gryphons capped their 3-0-1 season opening weekend with a 12-8 win over McGill. Hayley Cowls had a hat trick and Katelyn Ayers scored twice.
