The University of Guelph will host the 2014 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s rugby championship, it was announced this week.
The tournament is scheduled for Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 in 2014.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for the university and for our women’s rugby program,” said Tom Kendall, director of athletics at Guelph, in a news release.
“Women’s rugby is one of our strongest varsity programs and they have a large and loyal following. Hosting this championship will enable our team to perform at the highest level in front of a large and boisterous crowd. We are also thrilled to show how well Gryphon athletics can present and manage a first class national championship.”
Guelph has hosted the competition once in the past, in 1999.
The Gryphons claimed the inaugural CIS banner 15 years ago, and have since added 10 more national medals, including a second national trophy in 2011, and they made their fifth appearance in the championship match last season.
