At least two Guelph high school sports teams are on the shelf due to the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation labour dispute.
District 10/4 sports convenor Teresa Duck confirmed on Monday that the Centennial Spartans’ junior girls volleyball and junior boys basketball teams have withdrawn from their leagues until further notice. Also, the junior girls volleyball and junior boys hoops teams at Erin District high school have been shelved. Those four teams are coached by long-term occasional teachers, said Duck, and they’ve been instructed to withdraw from volunteer activities. As of Monday, games involving those teams have been postponed.
Centennial Spartans athletes from other sports, too, have been voicing displeasure on Twitter about the status of their respective teams. The Tribune called Centennial principal Deb Magahay on Monday morning to see if any other teams are affected, but, as of noon Tuesday, didn’t hear back.
While the Upper Grand District School Board and its high school teachers have ratified a new contract, a separate OSSTF bargaining unit, representing occasional teachers, hasn’t reached an agreement with the board.
