The Guelph Gryphons men’s soccer team was eliminated in heartbreak fashion Wednesday night at home.
Guelph lost 4-3 to Wilfrid Laurier in penalty kicks in the first-round OUA playoff game.
The Gryphons opened the scoring in the third minute of the game as Guelph’s Ethan Danielli, an Our Lady of Lourdes graduate, scored on a free kick.
Laurier took the lead before some late Gryphons heroics as Jared Agyemeng tied the game 2-2 in injury time of the second half.
Tim Flynn put Guelph up 3-2 in the first half of extra time before Laurier tied it 3-3 in the second half.
As snow fell at the Gryphons Soccer Complex, the teams each went 6-for-6 from the penalty spot before Gryphon Justin Springer was stopped. Laurier’s Matthew Maughns then scored to lift the visitors to victory.
