Lions sweep CWOSSA crowns

Senior boys hoops win is school’s first since 1999

The St. James Lions swept their way to CWOSSA AAA boys basketball titles on Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes high school.

St. James topped Brantford St. John’s 50-41 in the finals of the tournament to take the title.

It’s the school’s first senior boys CWOSSA title win since the 1998-1999 season.

Thanks to the CWOSSA victory, this year’s Lions advance to compete at the OFSAA AAA championships, which take place from March 3 to 5 in Welland.

The senior Lions are: Mike Rafter (coach), Jack Tersigni, Ryan Sherriff, Alex MacKeigan, Brendan Evans, Adam Black, Liam McCormack, Joey Hasson, Zach McClenaghan, Mitch Marquis, Quinn Feeney, Ryan Morales, Erwin Tapnio, Brennan O’Connor, Bob Sharpe (coach).

The junior Lions, recent winners of the District 10 title, won the CWOSSA crown by beating Waterloo St. David 86-67 in the championship game.

Elsewhere in CWOSSA play, the Bishop Macdonell Celtics struck gold in the AA championships by beating Owen Sound CVI 77-35 in the championship game.

The Celtics advance to compete at the OFSAA AA tournament next week in Perth and Smith Falls.

The Our Lady of Lourdes Crusaders won the junior AA CWOSSA title by topping Saugeen 48-22 in the finals.
