Guelph’s Dan McCarthy has been named recipient of the CIS Ken Shields Award for the second straight year.
The national award is presented annually to the student-athlete who exhibits outstanding achievement in basketball, academics and community involvement.
McCarthy, a Centennial CVI grad, just finished his final season with the Guelph Gryphons, and was named an OUA Second Team All-Star.
The biomedical science student has achieved Academic All-Canadian status each year at the U of G, said a news release.
McCarthy is regional coordinator for Brain Day, an organization that educates youth on brain safety. He volunteers with the Boys, Books and Basketball program at Mitchell Woods school.
He is a Student Athlete Mentor, which sees him tutoring student-athletes at the U of G, and, among other contributions, he also volunteers at Owen Sound General Hospital, assisting in patient transfers in the imaging department.
