The Guelph Royals have signed Guelph’s Shaun Valeriote for the upcoming Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) season.
Valeriote (Bishop Macdonell high school) was drafted by Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, picked in the 39th round. Last season, he was a member of the Vancouver Canadians, a minor league affiliate of the Blue Jays who play in the Northwest League.
A former OUA baseball star for the Brock Badgers, Valeriote was the IBL’s Rookie of the Year in 2011. That season, with the Guelph Royals not fielding a team, he played for the Kitchener Panthers and had a .385 batting average. He played nine games for the Royals during the 2012 season.
The Royals open their 2014 IBL season on Sunday May 11 when they visit Barrie for a 2 p.m. game. On Saturday May 17, Guelph is at Burlington for a 1 p.m. tilt.
The Royals home opener is on Victoria Day, Monday May 19, at 2 p.m. against Kitchener.
