Royals’ slugger is league MVP

Frankie Hare of the Guelph Royals has been named the Most Valuable Player for the Intercounty Baseball League’s 2012 season.

The Royals’ second baseman batted .414, finishing tied for second in the league in hitting. He also belted 10 home runs (fourth) and 36 RBIs (also fourth), while stealing 19 bases (tied for third) and making just four errors in the field all season.

Hare, 30, also won the MVP honour in the 2008 season. He takes home the John Bell Memorial Trophy as MVP.

The Guelph native received 29 votes to win the award. Second was Scott Thorman of the Brantford Red Sox, with 18.

Below are the league’s First and Second Team All-Stars for the season, along with votes received. The asterisk means the decision was unanimous.

Guelph’s scheduled playoff game against Barrie Thursday was postponed due to rain. The semifinal series is to start tonight (Friday) at Hastings Stadium in Guelph, though today’s forecast calls for rain also. If the game is a go, it’s to start at 7:30 p.m.
