Royals stagger into playoffs

The Guelph Royals aren’t exactly entering the post-season on a high note.

Guelph lost its last game of the Intercounty Baseball League regular season on Tuesday night, a 16-9 home defeat against the Hamilton Cardinals.

The Royals head into the playoffs having won just two of their final 13 games.

Tuesday night, Justin Interisano hit a grand slam for the Royals in a six-run fifth inning, but they couldn’t fully erase what was a 13-2 deficit entering the inning.

Nathan Borgas took the loss for Guelph in a one-inning start. He threw 23 pitches in the first inning, allowed four runs on four hits and two walks.

The Royals finish the regular season in fifth place in the eight-team league with a 17-19 record.

They’ll play either the Kitchener Panthers (18-17) or Brantford Red Sox (19-17) in the first round of the playoffs.

The IBL regular season winds up tonight (Thursday) with Kitchener taking on last-place Burlington (9-26).
