Running season kicks off in style

Almost 800 people took part in several races Saturday morning at the annual Marden Marathon, the first big outdoor local road race of the season.

The day featured a half-marathon and 10km and 5km races, along with a family fun run.

Participants were treated to sunny skies for the races which started at Marden’s Royal Distributing Athletic Performance Centre.

Rob McDonald of Marden won the 5km race in a time of 17:49.2. Top female and fourth overall was Clair Couper (no city named), in 18:55.6. Will Jaroszynski was top finisher in the 10km race in a time of 38:46.8.

Sensa Raneb of Ajax was top female and third overall in 40:25.0. Taking the half marathon title was Ken McAlpine of Waterloo in 1:17:53.1. Top female and 12th overall was Brenda Dolderman of Elora in 1:27:58.1.

The races raise funds for the Groves Memorial Community Hospital. The amount raised from this year’s races was still being tallied as the Tribune went to press.

Approximately 125 volunteers helped make the event happen.
