Turner Spears of the Guelph Silvercreeks, right, throws to first base to record a double play after beating a sliding Liam Wilson of the K-W Panthers to second base on Saturday at Hastings Stadium. Guelph won the game 10-9 with the winning run coming from a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

Silvercreeks in tight fight for first place

The second-place Guelph Silvercreeks have seven games remaining in their Junior Intercounty Baseball season, and four of them are versus first-place St. Thomas.

The Creeks are currently 18-3 on the season. St. Thomas holds down first place but has played far fewer games; they are 13-1.

In a matinee game this past Saturday at Hastings Stadium, the Silvercreeks scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to escape with a 10-9 victory over the K-W Junior Panthers.

With one out in the ninth and trailing 9-8, Turner Spears tripled to score Aaron Loder.

K-W then intentionally walked Bruce Yari and Michael Clouthier to load the bases in hopes of recording a double play, said a news release.

Instead, T.J. Baker hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the winning run for the home team.

This Friday night, the Silvercreeks host Brantford (16-3) at Hastings Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
