Cagers to play Hawks in playoffs
Despite a 6-16 record, the University of Guelph Gryphons men’s basketball team has earned a playoff spot.
The Gryphons will face the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in a first-round playoff game. As of the Tribune’s early holiday deadline, the playoff schedule had not been announced. Guelph got the last playoff spot in the OUA West and enters the post-season as its No. 6 seed. Laurier is the No. 3 seed.
On the road on the weekend, Guelph fell twice to Lakehead, 70-56 Saturday, and 80-76 in overtime Friday. Michel Clark had 12 points for Guelph Friday and 21 Saturday.
Volleyball Gryphs reach Final Four
The Guelph Gryphons women’s volleyball team is off to the OUA Final Four.
The locals swept Lakehead 3-0 in opening-round playoff play Saturday at home.
Rookies Madison DeDecker and Rachel Petcoff each had 10 points in the win. DeDecker had seven kills and three aces, and Petcoff had nine kills and one ace.
The Gryphons (14-5 in the regular season) will play Ottawa (14-5) in the first round of the OUA Final Four on Saturday at 2:30pm at the University of Toronto.
Hoops season ends with weekend losses
The Guelph Gryphons women’s basketball team’s season came to an end with a pair of road losses on the weekend.
Guelph lost twice to Lakehead, 87-78 Saturday and 87-74 Friday. In the Saturday loss, Marlee Freeman and Katherine MacTavish each scored 20 points for the Gryphons. Friday, Erin Tilley hit for 23.
Guelph finishes the season with a 7-22 record and out of the playoff picture.
Hockey Gryphons  to battle Western
The University of Guelph Gryphons men’s hockey team will face Western in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
Guelph finished its season with a 3-2 road loss against Toronto on the weekend, to wind up with a 12-12-4 record.
Carlos Amestoy and Kyle Neuber tallied for the Gryphons in the loss.
Game 1 of their best-of-three, opening-round series against Western (21-6-1) is Thursday at Western at 7 p.m.
Guelph sweeps Waterloo to advance
The Gryphons women’s hockey team has advanced to the OUA semifinals after sweeping Waterloo in their best-of-three, opening-round playoff series.
Guelph won Game 2 by a 1-0 score in Waterloo Saturday to advance.
Averi Nooren scored the game’s lone goal for Guelph in the second period. Stephanie Nehring earned the shutout in net.
It was Guelph’s 14th straight win as they closed the regular season with 12 victories in a row.
As of press time, their semifinal schedule was  yet to be determined.
