World rugby silver for former Gryphons

Former Guelph Gryphons women’s rugby players have earned silver medals with team Canada at the Women’s World Cup of Rugby in France.

Canada reached the finals of the event – for the first time ever – where they lost 21-9 against England on Sunday.

On the second-place Canadian team are ex-Gryphons Jacey Murphy, Mary-Jane Kirby and Britt Benn. The three were teammates on the 2011 Gryphons team that won the national title.

Colette McAuley, current Gryphons head coach and an ex-Gryphon player, is an assistant coach for Canada, and fellow former Gryphon Meaghan Howat is manager of the national women’s program.
