Bell, Van Hellemond seek re-election

Two more incumbent candidates have each thrown their hat in the ring for election to Guelph city council.
Bob Bell, who came first when he was re-elected in Ward 1 four years ago, officially filed his papers Sept. 3 to run again in the same ward.
First-time councillor Andy Van Hellemond, who has served in Ward 2 for the past four years, also says he plans to run again. Van Hellemond, who until recently was on the fence about whether or not to run, phoned the Trib Wednesday morning to say he had made up his mind and was running for a second term.
Joining Bell in the Ward 1 race is Guelph and District Labour Council executive board member Terry O’Connor. O’Connor officially filed in March, but launched his campaign at the annual Labour Day Picnic in Riverside Park on Monday Sept. 1.
Meanwhile, an unknown candidate has joined the race in Ward 5. Alex Green, who according to his website, grew up in the area and went to school in Ward 5, filed to run on Aug. 29. He is the fourth candidate running in the ward.
The deadline to file or withdraw nomination papers is Friday Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.
