Guelph minor hockey reveals details in Gryphon deal

The Guelph Minor Hockey Association has revealed details of its new agreement with the University of Guelph Gryphons.
Starting next season, GMHA rep teams will be wearing the colours and logo of the Gryphons men’s and women’s hockey teams, and the squads will be called Gryphons.
For more than a decade, local rep teams have been called the Guelph Junior Storm, thanks to the GMHA’s agreement with the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm.
Says an item on the GMHA web site: “As many of you have heard, we have made a switch from the Storm to the Gryphons next year. The Storm currently sponsors us for $8,000 a year along with season tickets. They offered the same again going forward for the next three years.”
The document on the GMHA site outlines what the Gryphons deal offers:
• $16,000 in free ice per year.
• The ability to use their buying power for GMHA jerseys, which saves $17,000 per year on rep jerseys and $5,000 a year on the house league jerseys. Total saving: $22,000.
• Sponsorship of a house league division for $4,000.
• Free admission for GMHA players to any sporting event except the Homecoming football game. This includes sports like hockey, baseball, soccer, football, volleyball, rugby etc.
• $10 discount off any summer camp at the university.
• $4,000 worth of advertising boards within the arena at the university.
• Use of their boardrooms, so coach clinics can be held right at the rink.
• Development opportunities to be finalized for coaches and players.
• 40% to 60% reduction in apparel for team track suits, jackets, etc.
The document, provided by the GMHA board of directors, says: “Please note there are still additional items being discussed and negotiated. When finalized, they will be announced. The board hopes that the members recognize the great value for our organization with over $40,000 in direct savings to GMHA per year, along with the additional perks and team savings in apparel.”
It continues: “GMHA would like to express its gratitude for the Guelph Storm’s support over the years and wish them much success going forward. The board would like to thank all of you who have taken the time to express your support in this decision and recognize that it was in the best interest of our kids.”
