Homegrown musical hits stage Sunday

A local theatrical choir for children will premiere a new musical about mermaids and journalists this Sunday, with two shows set for the 250-seat Guelph Little Theatre on Morris Street.
The Season Singers will perform “When Mermaids Sing” at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Feb. 24, with the Guelph Youth Dance Apprentice Company as special guests.
“When Mermaids Sing” follows the tale of two competing journalists who are under tremendous pressure to find a story good enough to save their respective newspaper and TV station, a news release said.
“During their search, they meet the Gossiping Gulls on a northern ice floe who suggest all manner of stories emanating from their world,” including “lemmings who are learning not to jump, the world’s trickiest foxes . . . and mermaids who are melting out of the ice,” the release said.  The journalists pursue the story, with results that will unfold on stage.
Season Singers artistic director and general manager Sue Smith wrote the new musical along with Barbara Bryce, Shannon Kingsbury and Augusta Supple, the release said. Smith, along with Kingsbury and Jeff Bird, created the music and lyrics. Bryce designed the show, with lighting by Brian Pickles.
Advance tickets are being sold at The Bookshelf.
