Walking tour explores Underground Railway

The Guelph Black Heritage Society is hosting a celebration in honour of Emancipation Day on Aug. 9.
The celebration will feature an Underground Railroad walking tour and will start at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s Heritage Hall at 83 Essex St.
From there, guests will board a bus to Woodlawn Memorial Park, where they will learn about the history of Guelph’s earliest African American settlers and their travel to Canada, a news release said.
The bus will then return to the hall for a question-and-answer session and informal social time.
Guests are asked to RSVP to info@guelphblackheritage.ca. More information is also available at www.guelphblackheritage.ca or at woodlawnmemorialpark.ca.
Walking shoes and sunscreen are recommended.
The event is free, but donations to the society toward operations and the installation of a wheelchair ramp will be accepted, said the news release.
